Paou – Chorto

The hiking route Paou-Chorto starts from the Paralia Paou (Paou beach) and ends at the settlement of Chorto. The route could be considered as a section of a long coastal traverse between Afyssos and Chorto, passing from Lefokastro and Kalamos. Although it’s a short hike, the hike Paou – Chorto is one of the most beautiful sections of this traverse since it runs across a pristine rural landscape and along the quiet shore of Pelion.

We start from the beach of Paou and go mildly uphill following the consecutive small roads. Finally, we reach the upper part of the settlement of Paou, where we leave the main road and take the old alley through the olive groves. Soon we walk around a leafy valley of many Mediterranean species until we find a better maintained road, treated with concrete at most of its length.

Another dirt road takes us downwards to a field located next to the sea. There we need to follow a narrow trail in order to reach a remote and dreamy beach. Soon, we pass by the tip of the coast, walking on the golden sand and very soon we move playfully on some scattered rocks, just next to the waves.

We leave the last rocks and move upward through another olive grove. A short trail takes us now in front of some tourist facilities where we need to follow the concrete alleys. Shortly, we reach the main road of Chorto and complete our route besde the pedestrian bridge, near the mouth of a beautiful ravine.

Tips

  • At Paralia Pau there are not any noteworthy services. In Chorto, on the other hand, there are several restaurants and grocery stores.
  • We will find drinkable water in the community fountain on the shore of Chorto, as well as in the old Dialetara fountain, a bit higher.

Warnings

  • The route literally passes through the sea, for a few meters, in a location where the coastline is very rocky. Therefore it can be difficult or even dangerous to cross this section when there is strong waves or bad weather.
