Milies – Tsagarada

The Milies – Tsagarada is one of those paths crossing Mt Pelion, which usually start from the west side and end in one of the villages on the east side. This is one of the longest trails in Pelion, which follows one of the old mule tracks, which belonged to the network of paths interconnecting both sides of the mountain. This route connects the important rural core of the crowded Tsagarada with the also agricultural Milies, which morover had the role of transport center, thanks to the railway Milies-Volos. During the operation of this railway connection, the mountain road Milies-Tsagarada saw long caravans of mules transporting agricultural products from the settlements of Tsagarada to the station of Milies.

The trail starts from the square of Milies and follows a gently uphill cobbled path, which soon meets a dirt road. We walk on the slightly uphill road for 550 m, crossing terrains of abandoned and preserved crops. We enter a section of an earth path 1300 m long, which crosses tall maquis vegetation (laurels, strawberry trees, Kermes oak, heathers). We go out again on a dirt road, which we follow until the end (length 1150 m.).

From here begins a section of a 2850 m long path that crosses a beautiful beech forest and reaches the Xourichtiano stream, where we discover the remains of an old bridge with stone pedestals and a wooden deck.

From Xourichtiano stream we take a dirt road that descends smoothly to Xourichti. Arriving at the chapel of Agios Dimitrios, we leave the road and enter a path that crosses a densely forested chestnut grove and reaches the chapel of Agios Konstantinos (where the road from Xourichti ends).

From here, a short downhill path takes us to the asphalt between Xourichti and Tsagarada. We cross the road and go down to the Mylopotamos stream. We cross the stream with a stone-built single-arched bridge. A short uphill leads again to the asphalt, at the southern entrance of the Taxiarches neighborhood of Tsagarada.
