Portaria – Alli Meria

This route allows the connection of Portaria with Alli Meria, from where the paths to Anavros and Agria deviate. Thus, this small, downhill route connects the mountain villages of Volos with the Coast route and South Pelion.

The route maneuvers between the main roads, looking for the most suitable hiking trail.

Starting from the commercial center of Portaria, the route Portaria-Alli Meria passes through the parking lot and the parish church of Panagia Portaitissa. After a few tens of meters on the asphalt, the trail takes a cement road towards Pano Katichori.

After the church of Agia Anna, we continue in a nice cobbled alley, passing by the museum Hatzigianni Olive Mill. We cross an asphalt road and after the cemetery church of Agii Apostoli, we leave Pano Katichori, which is almost connected to Portaria, and enter Kato Katichori. We pass near the parish church of the settlement, Agios Athanasios, and continue the downhill course to the SE. The route intersects once again the asphalt road, to continue in alleys, which run between olive groves and zones of natural vegetation. At the NE entrance of Alli Meria, the route bypass the ecclesiastical hostel of the Diocese of Demitriados with a newer cobbled path on its left, to continue on a path next to an orchard. We meet the asphalt near the church of Agios Apostolos of Alli Meria.

We cross the asphalt again and after the old hostel of Stamos Stournas, we end up near the church of Agios Athanasios, in the old center of Alli Meria. We continue to the parking lot, on the main road Allis Meria-Portaria.

The hike is well waymarked with red old marks on the rocks and on the walls.

Tips

There are many fountains with water along the way
By appointment, we can visit the Hatzigianni Olive Mill and the adjacent Olive Museum
Mainly in the sparse urban area of the settlements between Portaria and Alli Meria, the route is nevertheless interesting
Of particular interest is the Stamos Stournas mansion, formerly Hatziargyri mansion, which was renovated to function as an architecture student hostel
