Tiseo ascent

Mt Tisseo sprawls on the geographical axis between the rugged cape of Trikeri and the natural tip of Mt Pelion, an area of mild relief close to the village of Platania. Although this steep and rocky ridge is unapproachable from the south, Mt Tisseo has two fordable accesses starting from Marathia and Panagitsa.

The route Panagitsa–Evzonas begins at the historical chapel of Panagia, which is hidden near the coast, beneath the main road from Volos to Trikeri. The trail starts next to the main road and it’s well indicated and defined. At first, we walk along a steep slope inside thorny evergreen bushes until we reach a large rectangular field. Then, the trail continues to the left side of this field and takes us to an inclined depression, known as Lakka Karatasou. Up to here, the signage is reliable with red marks on the stones.

After we pass through this large field, we continue on an indistinct trail, marked with orange dots and defined with large cairns. Our ascent follows this sharp ridge as we walk towards the steep and rocky peak in front of us. Regarding the vegetation cover, at this last and more challenging rocky section, it’s low and easy to walk through it. Then, as we approach to the peak, the marks become scarcer. However, we can easily aim at our destination.
Finally, we reach at the peak of Evzonas (644m), where we can enjoy the amazing view to the high mountains of Central Greece (Mt Parnassos, Mt Giona and Mt Oeta) and Mt Olympus, while we also have a panoramic view to the wider area of Mt Pelion.

Tips

  • Although the hike is rather short, 1 lt of water is probably necessary in the summer.
  • In March, the flora of this zone is particularly impressive. Look for the orchids of the Mediterranean zone.
  • Find out about the Panorama option of your mobile phone: once on the top, you will need it!

Warnings

  • A few problems with the vegetation in the middle of the ascent to the meadow.
  • The marking on the first leg is good. From Lakka Karatasou to the top, the big stonepiles help in the orientation.
